Frequently Asked Questions

What is HDTV?
HDTV is High Definition Television.  HD resolutions go up to 1080p, which is more than four times as defined as standard TV.  The number 1080 means there are 1080 vertical lines of resolution.  This creates a much clearer picture than standard definition.

What is the difference between 1080i and 1080p?
The “i” stands for interlaced and the “p” stands for progressive scan.  An interlaced picture will “paint” every other line of resolution and then come back and “paint” in the rest.  A progressive picture will “paint” in every line of resolution sequentially making for a cleaner and smoother picture especially in motion sensitive video like sports.

What is the difference between composite and component video?
Composite video is not capable of carrying HDTV.  Component video is a three-wire connection that is capable of carrying HDTV by separating the three ranges of color.

What is HDMI?
HDMI stands for High Definition Multiple Interface.  It is the best connection between an HD source and an HDTV.  It carries digital high definition video as well as digital audio.

Which should I pick, plasma or LCD?
Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference.  Both plasma and LCD TVs have their advantages and disadvantages.  Plasma TVs have better contrast, the ratio between black and white, and provide a clearer picture.  LCD TVs have more intense color reproduction and weigh much less.

SIZE: If you are looking for a smaller TV, LCD is the way to go.  Plasma TVs are generally not available below 40”.  If you want a larger TV, plasma may be a better option.  LCD TVs become cost-prohibitive beyond 55”.  Between 40” and 55”, consider the advantages and disadvantages above.

LOCATION: Plasma TVs tend to glare in bright locations.  If you have a lot of windows near the TV, look for an LCD or anti-glare plasma.

If I get a plasma TV, do I need to worry about burn-in?
Modern plasma TVs have all but eliminated burn-in as an issue.  It can still happen, but it is not easy to do.  Many plasma TVs have built in screen savers or other features to eliminate burn-in.

Is a front projector right for me?
If you want that “movie theater” feel, then a front projector is the way to go.  Screen sizes from 84” and larger matched up with amazing surround sound will make you feel like you are in the movie, on the field, or immersed in nature.

I want surround sound, what should I get?
Depending on your goals and budget, we can make recommendations from an affordable home theater in a box, which includes a receiver, speakers, and a subwoofer, to a complete surround sound setup customized for your space.

What do you charge?
The consultation cost is $50; however once the project is completed that amount is deducted from your total amount due.  The labor rate is $50 per hour, per installer, with a two-hour minimum.  A consultation may not be needed for each job and can be discussed over the phone.

How many installers will I need?
Two installers are generally needed for projects requiring hanging a TV over 40”, running wires in-wall, or retrofitting speakers into existing construction.  Smaller jobs like adding a DVD player or replacing a receiver might only require one installer.  Unfortunately, due to liability concerns we cannot accept help from you.

What is included in your consultation?
During the consultation we will discuss your project and your goals.  We will help you determine what products are right for your situation and what accessories are needed.  Also, we will look at installation options and estimate how long the installation will take.

What area do you work in?
We work in the entire Twin Cities metro area as well as up to 30 miles from Shakopee, MN.  We may accept jobs farther away, but a trip charge may be applied.

What additional accessories or products do I need for my job?
Depending on your equipment and situation, different video and audio cables, as well as TV or speaker mounts, may be required.  Specialty wall plates and other accessories may also be required.  We can provide any accessories or you can purchase them yourself.  We can discuss this during the consultation.

Do I need an outlet behind my TV?
If you want a TV hung on the wall and you want all of the wires hidden, an electrical outlet is needed behind the TV.  It is against Minnesota electrical code to run any power cords through a wall.  We have an electrician that can add an electrical outlet for an additional fee.

Custom Home Theater exceeded my expectations.  I was frustrated with the sound quality from my existing "builder installed" system and Phil immediately diagnosed the problem and made the recommendation for a new receiver to give me the boost I needed.  Once Phil installed the new receiver, my favorite songs were filling every nook and cranny throughout the house.
